Kelowna Branch

Report for 2015-2017

We have 12 members.

We get a $10,000 gaming grant and we support Ukrainian Arts and Culture in B.C. only. We also support the Kelowna Senior Citizens Club which uses the Church basement and pay most of the grant monies they receive to the Church for use of the basement.

The Ukrainian Orthodox congregation of Kelowna was organized in July, 1957. A lay society called the Ukrainian Cultural Society was formed and was active until 1964. During 1971/72, the Ukrainian Orthodox congregation built their church, which is still active today. In 1974, a Ukrainian Women’s organization was formed and was chartered in 1975 as the Savella Stechishin Branch of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada.

There was talk of organizing a branch of the Ukrainian Self-Reliance Association, but no definite action was taken until 1981. On December 26, 1981 a resolution was passed unanimously to form the Kelowna Branch of the USRA.
